A Colorful Movie Weekend: Wicked and Gladiator II Set to Dominate the Box Office

The movie-going landscape this weekend is set to sparkle with excitement as Universal’s Wicked and Paramount’s Gladiator II take center stage, with projections suggesting these two films could collectively surpass $200 million in box office revenue. Their arrival marks the beginning of the high-stakes holiday season, which is expected to generate a surge in ticket sales as the Thanksgiving holiday approaches.

According to Shawn Robbins, the director of analytics at Fandango and founder of Box Office Theory, the debut of Wicked and Gladiator II is the culmination of years of anticipation. “While the fall box office has had its ups and downs, these two films are poised to launch a potentially historic holiday season,” Robbins said. With Disney’s Moana 2 set to follow next week, industry experts are predicting a strong close to the year.

Wicked Shatters Expectations

Wicked, the big-screen adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical, is already making waves before its official weekend debut. Early screenings this week have already amassed a remarkable $19.2 million domestically, including $5.7 million from a special nationwide screening on Wednesday. While initial projections for the film’s opening weekend were around $80 million, those estimates have now been revised upward to a range of $120 million to $140 million. Some industry insiders are even predicting the film could surpass these numbers.

The early success of Wicked comes as a major relief to Hollywood, which has seen mixed results from movie musicals in recent years. Based on one of Broadway’s most iconic and popular shows, Wicked is exceeding expectations. The film boasts an impressive 92% “Fresh” rating from over 160 critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and a stellar 99% approval rating from moviegoers, as measured by the site’s PopcornMeter. If these trends continue, Wicked is on track to break the record for the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation, a title currently held by Disney’s Into the Woods, which earned $31 million on its opening weekend in 2014.

Gladiator II Roars Back to Life

In the other corner, Gladiator II is making a triumphant return to theaters nearly 24 years after the original film. Early box office reports indicate the film has already earned $6.5 million from Thursday night previews and is expected to bring in between $60 million and $80 million over the weekend. With a solid 73% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film is poised to continue the legacy of Ridley Scott’s Oscar-winning epic.

For perspective, the original Gladiator opened to $34.8 million back in 2000. Despite the long gap between the two films, the buzz surrounding Gladiator II suggests it will perform strongly, aided by positive reviews and a devoted fanbase.

The “Glicked” Phenomenon

Media analysts are already drawing comparisons between the dual success of Wicked and Gladiator II and the summer box office phenomenon of “Barbenheimer,” referring to the surprising success of Barbie and Oppenheimer. Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, explained, “The so-called ‘Glicked’ movie mashup is helping raise the profile of both films. With overwhelmingly positive reviews and a cultural moment surrounding them, they’re set for a strong opening and may enjoy continued success through the holiday season.”

Looking Ahead

As these two major films prepare for their big opening weekend, the industry is bracing for an exciting end to the year. With Wicked and Gladiator II leading the way, and Moana 2 on the horizon, this holiday season looks set to be one of the most lucrative in recent memory for movie studios.
