Amazon Enters the Bargain Market with Haul: Competing with Low-Cost Retail Giants

Amazon has introduced a new mobile-exclusive shopping platform named Haul, designed to appeal to consumers seeking budget-friendly items. This launch positions Amazon to compete with popular low-cost retailers such as Temu and Shein, both of which have built substantial customer bases by offering inexpensive products with extended delivery times. Haul, available through the Amazon Shopping app exclusively for U.S. shoppers, boasts product prices capped at $20, with many items priced below $10, making it a strategic move in the competitive low-cost retail market.

Haul offers a variety of products, such as a three-piece razor set and a jewelry set including a necklace, bracelet, and earrings—all priced just under $3. To further entice shoppers, Amazon is offering free shipping on orders over $25, though delivery can take up to two weeks. This extended shipping time aligns with the models employed by Temu and Shein, which prioritize affordability over speed.

This venture represents Amazon’s entry into the competitive bargain shopping segment, which has grown rapidly due to the success of Chinese e-commerce leaders Temu and Shein. These platforms have seen significant gains by leveraging cost-effective business models that prioritize low prices, but they have also been scrutinized for their environmental impact and the potential use of import loopholes to minimize expenses.

Retail analyst Sucharita Kodali from Forrester highlighted the challenges Amazon might face with Haul. She noted that similar business models have drawn criticism for unsustainable practices and poor-quality products. “Temu and Shein have faced backlash both for taking advantage of import loopholes and for being wasteful and environmentally irresponsible,” Kodali explained. She pointed out that Amazon’s new initiative could face similar criticisms if it does not carefully navigate these concerns.

Amazon’s Dharmesh Mehta, Vice President of Worldwide Selling Partner Services, expressed confidence in the new platform’s potential, emphasizing the importance of affordable pricing for consumers. He noted that Haul’s launch as a beta experience allows Amazon to gather user feedback and make necessary adjustments. Mehta reassured customers that the products offered through Haul would maintain Amazon’s commitment to quality and safety, backed by product guarantees.

While Haul’s debut is limited to the U.S. market, questions have emerged about whether Amazon will expand this service internationally. The company has not disclosed plans for a UK launch or other global rollouts at this time.

Despite the promising aspects of Haul, Kodali cautioned that the initiative is not without risk. She pointed out that consumer sentiment has been shifting, with some shoppers becoming more discerning about product quality and delivery times. “If the products don’t meet expectations and are unprofitable for Amazon, I don’t expect Haul to last long,” she remarked.

As Haul begins its rollout, Amazon’s ability to balance low prices, product quality, and customer satisfaction will be critical to its success in this competitive market. The coming months will reveal whether Haul can carve out its niche or if the challenges that have faced similar platforms will pose insurmountable obstacles for Amazon.
