Apple Strengthens Satellite Connectivity with $1.5 Billion Investment in Globalstar

In a strategic move to bolster its iPhone services, Apple has announced an investment of approximately $1.5 billion in satellite communications provider Globalstar. This funding, disclosed in a recent securities filing, includes $1.1 billion in cash along with an additional $232 million to address Globalstar’s existing debt, granting Apple a 20% equity stake in the company. The deal is set to be finalized early next week.

This partnership underscores Apple’s commitment to expanding iPhone functionality through advanced satellite connectivity. Globalstar has been a crucial partner in Apple’s satellite ventures, particularly with the launch of emergency satellite texting capabilities in 2022. This feature has enabled iPhone users to send emergency texts when traditional cellular service is unavailable—a service made possible by Globalstar’s satellite infrastructure.

Apple’s investment aligns with the growing direct-to-device (D2D) satellite connectivity trend, which allows everyday smartphones to communicate directly with satellites without requiring additional equipment. With this move, Apple joins an expanding field of tech innovators in D2D technology, including SpaceX, AST SpaceMobile, Iridium, Lynk, and EchoStar.

News of the partnership had an immediate impact on Globalstar’s market performance, with shares rising by 31.4% and closing at $1.38 on Friday. According to the filing, approximately 85% of Globalstar’s network capacity will remain dedicated to Apple, further solidifying the relationship between the two companies.

The new funding will be instrumental for Globalstar, allowing the company to expand its infrastructure. Plans include purchasing additional satellites to augment its current fleet of 31 and expand its ground operations. These enhancements are expected to support Globalstar’s low Earth orbit constellation, with up to 26 new satellites anticipated to join the network in the near future.

This investment places Apple in a stronger position within the rapidly growing satellite communications market. As demand for satellite-based connectivity increases, this partnership not only elevates Apple’s presence in telecommunications but also promises an improved connectivity experience for iPhone users worldwide.
