Baidu Acquires YY Live in $2.1 Billion Deal, Strengthening Its Position in China’s Digital Video Market

In a strategic move to expand its footprint in China’s fast-growing digital video sector, Baidu has successfully acquired JOYY’s China-based live-streaming platform, YY Live, for approximately $2.1 billion. The deal, which had been stalled due to regulatory challenges, marks the revival of an acquisition agreement originally set at $3.6 billion during the height of the pandemic-driven surge in live-streaming demand.

The acquisition deal was initially hindered by regulatory roadblocks in January 2023, causing its collapse. However, following recent changes in China’s regulatory environment, which has become more favorable toward technology companies, negotiations were revived, leading to the completion of the transaction.

Baidu, a company founded in 2000 by Robin Li and Eric Xu, initially made its mark as a search engine and has since evolved into one of China’s leading tech giants. Baidu is frequently mentioned alongside Alibaba and Tencent as part of the so-called “BAT” companies, known for shaping the country’s digital landscape. Baidu pioneered AI-driven search technologies and has since developed a comprehensive ecosystem that includes everything from cloud services to autonomous driving. The company remains a formidable force, particularly in sectors such as voice recognition and natural language processing, even as competition intensifies in the tech space.

This deal sees Baidu obtaining an additional $240 million, bringing the total acquisition value to $2.1 billion after a partial payment of $1.86 billion was made in February 2021 as part of the initial agreement. This strategic acquisition allows Baidu to diversify its business model and intensify its competition with leading online entertainment platforms, such as ByteDance’s TikTok and Douyin, which have long dominated China’s live-streaming and short-video markets.

The acquisition has been well-received by investors, with Baidu’s U.S.-listed shares increasing by 1% in premarket trading and JOYY’s shares rising by 6%. This optimism is fueled by the potential of the acquisition to reinvigorate Baidu’s entertainment offerings and strengthen its position in the video-streaming market. Baidu’s U.S.-listed subsidiary, iQIYI, often referred to as “China’s Netflix,” has faced stiff competition from rivals such as Tencent Video and Youku, owned by Alibaba. The addition of YY Live’s assets could give Baidu the competitive edge it needs to assert its dominance in the sector.

A key benefit of the deal is the unlocking of $1.6 billion in escrow funds that had been set aside since 2020. These funds can now be directed toward Baidu’s artificial intelligence and cloud computing infrastructure, areas where the company has been increasingly focused. This move also positions Baidu to stay at the forefront of generative AI technology, competing against emerging players such as the AI startup DeepSeek, which is reshaping the tech landscape.

By acquiring YY Live, Baidu signals its intent to regain its leadership role in China’s tech ecosystem. This acquisition not only bolsters its search engine dominance but also strengthens its position in the live-streaming and entertainment sectors. Furthermore, it positions Baidu to innovate in AI-driven content creation, enhancing its capabilities as the competition in both video streaming and AI technology intensifies across the globe.
