BRICS’ New Gold-Backed Currency: A Challenge to US Dollar Dominance

Source: Medium.com

The BRICS alliance—comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—is poised to launch a groundbreaking new currency backed by gold, aiming to counter the dominance of the US dollar. This strategic move could herald a new financial era for the bloc, strengthening its position on the global stage. With recent aggressive gold purchases, financial experts suggest that this development could signal the “beginning of the end” for the US dollar.

Surge in Gold Prices

In a recent analysis for the intelligence consultancy GIS, Vahan Roth discussed the surge in gold prices, which reached an all-time high of $2,480 per ounce on July 17. Roth attributes this rise to ongoing geopolitical turbulence, with active conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East posing a risk of escalating into broader international conflicts. He also highlighted the impact of significant elections in India, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Mexico, and the upcoming US presidential election, all contributing to global economic uncertainty.

BRICS’ Gold Accumulation

The World Gold Council reported that BRICS has been the largest buyer of gold since 2022, stockpiling substantial reserves. This accumulation aligns with the bloc’s advocacy for a more multipolar world order and discussions among its founding members about launching a gold-backed currency. Despite the BRICS+ alliance being less formalized than the European Union, it represents a significant portion of the global population and economy—about 3.5 billion people (45% of the global population), controlling 30% of the world’s land surface, and accounting for over 37% of global GDP.

Implications for the US Dollar

A gold-backed BRICS currency could be transformative in the financial world, potentially diminishing the US dollar’s role as the primary currency for international transactions. Developing countries might prefer this new currency for cross-border trade, further solidifying BRICS’ influence and diminishing the US dollar’s global dominance. This shift could redefine global economic power dynamics, placing BRICS and other emerging economies in a stronger position on the world stage.

Conclusion

The launch of a gold-backed currency by BRICS represents a significant step towards a multipolar world financial system. As the bloc continues to amass gold reserves, its new currency could challenge the US dollar’s supremacy, encouraging other nations to reconsider their reliance on the dollar for international trade. This development underscores the evolving landscape of global finance, where traditional power structures are increasingly being questioned and redefined.
