British Virgin Islands Grants Visa-Free Access to Guyanese Passports, Strengthening Regional Ties

The British Virgin Islands (BVI) government has made a significant move to foster stronger regional connections by exempting holders of Guyanese passports from visa requirements for entry into the territory. This policy change, endorsed by the BVI Cabinet, was announced by Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr. Natalio D. Wheatley, during a press conference on September 30. Dr. Wheatley emphasized that this initiative is aligned with the BVI’s commitment to regional cooperation and is set to enhance travel, trade, tourism, and investment across Caribbean nations.

“This decision underscores our shared vision of regional cooperation and opens new opportunities for cultural exchange,” Dr. Wheatley stated. He pointed out that numerous Caribbean nationals already enjoy visa-free entry to the BVI, and extending this privilege to Guyanese citizens solidifies Guyana’s role as a vital partner within the Caribbean community.

Guyana: A Growing Economic Leader

Premier Wheatley elaborated on the reasons behind the Cabinet’s decision, citing Guyana’s remarkable economic expansion. In 2022, Guyana’s economy recorded an unprecedented 62.3% growth, primarily fueled by its booming oil and gas industry along with progress in agriculture, mining, and construction. “For the BVI, this positions Guyana as an essential partner for collaboration and investment. Why now? As a CARICOM member and rising global force, Guyana exemplifies sustainable growth and adept international diplomacy,” Dr. Wheatley explained.

Additionally, he highlighted Guyana’s recent appointment to the United Nations Security Council, a milestone that amplifies the Caribbean’s influence on global discussions surrounding peace and security. This development further solidifies Guyana’s standing as an influential voice in international affairs.

Strong Interest from Global Powers

The Premier noted that Guyana’s rapid economic growth has captured the attention of major global players, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Brazil. He pointed out that a recent trade mission to Guyana, led by Deputy Premier and Minister for Financial Services, Labour, and Trade, Hon. Lorna G. Smith, OBE (AL), in August 2023, underscored the strategic importance of nurturing ties with Guyana. The mission was described as “timely and fruitful” and paved the way for expanded partnerships.

Next Steps: MoU for Enhanced Collaboration

Premier Wheatley also announced that the BVI is in the process of drafting a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at bolstering cooperation with Guyana. “As promised, we have granted visa-free access, and we are working on a Memorandum of Understanding to deepen cooperation between Guyana and the BVI,” he revealed. On the timeline for the visa exemption’s implementation, Dr. Wheatley stated that discussions with the Immigration Department and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Sustainable Development would follow. He assured that the measure, now approved by the Cabinet, would be enacted swiftly.

This move is expected to foster mutual benefits, strengthen bilateral relations, and contribute to greater regional unity and growth.
