CARICOM Initiates Youth Empowerment Workshop to Tackle Climate Change

GEORGETOWN, Guyana – In a determined effort to mobilize young leaders in climate action, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has launched an orientation and training program focusing on the interconnections between climate change and health. The event, presided over by CARICOM Secretary-General Dr. Carla Barnett, took place on April 23 at the CARICOM Secretariat.

Empowering Youth as Agents of Change

During the event, Dr. Barnett highlighted the urgency of involving young people in the fight against climate change, noting its direct impacts on human health, livelihoods, and regional well-being. With youth making up 60 percent of the CARICOM region’s population, their role is seen as crucial in driving effective climate action. “Climate change is not a distant threat, but a present and serious challenge,” Barnett stated.

The four-day workshop aims to deepen the understanding of climate-related health risks among over 60 participating CARICOM Youth Ambassadors and leaders, enhancing their ability to lead impactful initiatives.

Leadership and Participation

High-level officials, including Guyana’s Minister of Health, Hon. Dr. Frank Anthony, and Ms. Alison Drayton, Assistant Secretary-General of Human and Social Development, attended the opening ceremony, demonstrating the high priority given to climate issues within the region. Dr. Anthony emphasized the importance of empowering youth to advocate for evidence-based policies and to participate actively in decision-making processes.

Contributions of International Partners

The event also celebrated the contributions of international partners such as the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the European Union (EU), which have supported CARICOM through the 11th European Development Fund (EDF) in addressing critical issues like climate change.

Youth Initiatives and Leadership

Highlighting the success of youth-led initiatives, Dr. Barnett praised projects by young leaders such as Dwane Hendrickson from St. Kitts and Nevis and Renee Atwell from Trinidad and Tobago, who have actively engaged their communities in mitigating the impacts of climate change. These efforts have not only shown significant local impact but also inspired other young leaders across the region to launch similar projects.

Ongoing Commitment and Future Plans

Dr. Barnett reassured attendees of CARICOM’s ongoing commitment to youth engagement, stressing the importance of creating opportunities for young people to both contribute and lead. “We will continue to strengthen our capacity to work meaningfully with young people and to create opportunities that not only impart knowledge but also harness the insights and energy of our youth,” she declared.

Call to Action

In closing, Minister Anthony encouraged the youth to utilize their creativity and passion to drive change and help shape a healthier, more resilient Caribbean. The workshop is a clear step towards ensuring that the voices and ideas of young leaders are integral to the region’s climate strategy and actions.

This initiative by CARICOM not only aims to educate and empower but also ensures that the next generation is at the forefront of crafting sustainable solutions to the climate challenges facing the Caribbean and the wider world.
