Despite Biggest Defense Budget, U.S. Army Personnel Not Largest in the World
In a surprising revelation, despite being considered the biggest military force globally, the United States doesn’t have the largest army in terms of personnel. According to estimates from GlobalFirepower.com, the graphic shows the top 10 countries by military personnel as of May 2024, including active and reserve personnel, as well as paramilitary forces.

Vietnam, India, and South Korea Have the Biggest Armies
Leading the chart is Vietnam with a staggering 5.8 million personnel, followed closely by India with 5.1 million, and South Korea with 3.8 million. These figures highlight the massive reserve forces these countries maintain alongside their active duty soldiers.
China: The Largest Standing Army
China, known for having the largest standing army, boasts over 2 million active personnel. The country has significantly increased its defense spending over the last few decades, now ranking third globally in the number of tanks and second in the number of aircraft carriers in service. However, when reserve personnel are factored in, the Chinese military falls behind those of Vietnam, India, South Korea, and Russia.
Vietnam’s Extensive Reserve Forces
Vietnam’s military includes 600,000 active personnel and over 5 million in reserve. This extensive reserve is partly due to the country’s conscription policy, which mandates military service for young adults, a practice also seen in countries like South Korea and Israel.
Europe and North America’s Largest Armies
Russia, straddling Europe and Asia, has 3.6 million personnel, reflecting its extensive military capabilities. Ukraine has seen a significant increase in its military numbers, a consequence of the 2022 Russian invasion, with personnel numbers rising from around 170,000 in 2016 to over 900,000, bringing the total to 2.2 million. The United States, despite its enormous defense budget, has 2.1 million personnel.
Other Notable Militaries
North Korea, known for its militaristic regime, maintains 2 million military personnel. Pakistan and Iran have 1.7 million and 1.2 million personnel, respectively, rounding out the list of the top 10 countries by military size.
U.S. Military Expenditure
Despite not having the largest army, the U.S. dominates global military expenditures, accounting for almost 40% of the world’s total. In 2022, U.S. defense spending reached $877 billion. China ranks second in absolute terms, contributing 13% of global military expenditure with $292 billion.
