Disfrutar in Barcelona Tops “The World’s 50 Best Restaurants” List for 2024

This year’s edition of ‘The World’s 50 Best Restaurants’ by publishing group William Reed Business Media was released on Wednesday night, marking one of the most highly anticipated events of the culinary calendar. Often referred to as the Oscars of gastronomy, this ranking highlights the finest dining experiences across the globe.

Disfrutar, located in Barcelona, has been named the top restaurant in the world for 2024. Following closely are Asador Etxebarri in Atxondo and Table in Paris, securing the second and third positions respectively.

Europe remains a dominant force in this year’s rankings, with five out of the top ten restaurants located on the continent. Spain shines particularly bright with three entries: Disfrutar, Asador Etxebarri, and Diverxo in Madrid. France and Denmark also made notable appearances with Table and Alchemist in Copenhagen.

Latin America has also demonstrated its culinary prowess with three top-ten entries. Maido in Lima, ranked fifth, continues to impress with its Nikkei cuisine. Quintonil in Mexico City and Don Julio in Buenos Aires complete the region’s strong showing, ranked seventh and tenth respectively.

Asia’s top performer is Gaggan in Bangkok, securing the ninth position. Known for its innovative Indian cuisine, Gaggan has consistently been a favorite among food critics and enthusiasts.

The United States has one representative in the top ten this year. Atomix, located in Manhattan’s Koreatown, serves modern Korean dishes and has climbed two spots to sixth place since last year.

The World’s 50 Best Restaurants was first launched 20 years ago by the British magazine Restaurant Magazine as an alternative to the Michelin stars system. Despite its prestige, the ranking has faced criticism over the years for alleged elitism and favoritism, with claims that jurors tend to favor restaurants owned by people they know. Additionally, the list has been scrutinized for its heavy focus on European restaurants and a few major cities worldwide.

As the culinary world continues to evolve, the spotlight on these exceptional restaurants reminds us of the diverse and dynamic nature of global cuisine. Whether in Europe, Latin America, Asia, or the United States, these top-ranked establishments set the standard for dining excellence.
