Prime Minister, Dr the Honourable Andrew Holness, and Her Excellency Dr. Erja Askola, EU Ambassador to Jamaica, at the third staging of the EU-JA 5K & 10K Run. The Prime Minister lauded the European Union for its ongoing contributions to the country’s growth and progress, describing it as one of Jamaica’s most reliable development partners.

In a remarkable show of unity and commitment to social progress, over 4,200 participants took to the streets of Kingston on Sunday, March 9, for the annual EU-JA 5K & 10K Run. This year’s event surpassed all expectations, marking the largest turnout in its three-year history. The initiative, focused on reducing crime and violence through education and social development, resonated deeply with the community.

Organized in collaboration with the Ministry of National Security (MNS) and the Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information (MOESYI), the event carried the theme “All Together Against Crime & Violence.” The race also served as a launchpad for the European Union’s (EU) 50th anniversary celebrations, highlighting five decades of partnership and support for Jamaica’s development and security.

Leaders Applaud the EU’s Commitment to Jamaica

Prime Minister Dr. The Most Hon. Andrew Holness commended the EU for its unwavering contributions to Jamaica, stating that the event’s record-breaking turnout reflected public appreciation.

“The European Union is one of our most important and reliable development partners. The EU has been very good to Jamaica, and Jamaicans recognize this,” Holness remarked.

EU Ambassador to Jamaica, Dr. Erja Askola, shared similar sentiments, emphasizing the deeper purpose of the event.

“The EU-JA 5K & 10K Run is more than just a race; it is a movement that reinforces the importance of education and early intervention in creating safer communities,” she stated.

Education as a Tool for Crime Prevention

The race also had the backing of renowned Olympian Shanieka Ricketts, who served as the event’s race patron. She voiced her strong support for education as a transformative force in communities.

Similarly, State Minister Hon. Juliet Cuthbert-Flynn highlighted that strategic partnerships are essential for long-term crime prevention efforts.

“The Ministry of National Security is committed to supporting community-driven interventions, as they play a crucial role in fostering safer neighborhoods,” Cuthbert-Flynn affirmed.

Supporting Literacy in Underserved Schools

Proceeds from the event will directly benefit the Creative Language-Based Learning (CLBL) Foundation, a program dedicated to improving literacy in underprivileged schools. Institutions such as Cockburn Gardens Primary, Calabar Primary, and Tavares Gardens Primary will receive funding, aligning with the Inter-Ministerial School Support Strategy, which aims to break cycles of violence through education.

Minister of Education, Senator Dr. the Honourable Dana Morris Dixon, reinforced the importance of education in citizen security:

“The EU’s continued investment in our Citizen Security Plan is helping to build a more inclusive and secure Jamaica. By strengthening educational outcomes, we are empowering young people to create a brighter future.”

Sponsors, Volunteers, and the Power of Collective Action

The success of the event was made possible by the dedicated efforts of volunteers, the Running Events JA organizing team, and several sponsors, including The Jamaica Observer, Catherines Peak, and the Heart Foundation of Jamaica.

As the European Union and Jamaica celebrate 50 years of collaboration, this event stands as a testament to the power of collective action. The funds raised will be officially handed over in the coming months, ensuring that schools and communities most in need experience tangible benefits.

This year’s EU-JA 5K & 10K Run has proven that when a community runs together, meaningful change follows.
