In celebration of World Sight Day on October 10, Eye Q Optical, a pioneering eye care provider in Jamaica since its founding in 1999, is reaffirming its commitment to enhancing the vision and eye health of Jamaican children through its well-known corporate social responsibility initiative, ‘Mission Vision.’ Eye Q Optical, with branches in Kingston and St. Ann, has earned a reputation as a leader in providing advanced optical services, combining the latest technology with a personal touch.

‘Mission Vision,’ launched in 2013, has had a profound impact on underserved children across Jamaica by offering free eye screenings and eyewear to those who otherwise lack access to essential vision care. This year, Eye Q Optical is aligning its efforts with the global theme of World Sight Day, ‘Love Your Eyes,’ to underscore the importance of addressing children’s specific vision needs. The day serves as a reminder of the critical role eye health plays in overall well-being, while also helping to raise awareness about vision impairments and promoting better access to eye care.

Around the world, approximately 450 million children are affected by vision problems that go untreated, significantly impacting their academic and social development. Simple solutions, like providing glasses, can open new doors for these children, improving their educational outcomes and boosting their confidence. Through partnerships with industry leaders such as Marchon Eyewear, Kouture Ventures, and Hoya Lens UK, Eye Q Optical has provided thousands of free eye screenings and hundreds of glasses over the past decade, empowering countless children to reach their full potential.

Dr. Aron Wohl, CEO and Lead Optometrist at Eye Q Optical, emphasized the importance of this initiative: “Seeing a child experience clear vision for the first time is a moment we cherish. The feedback we receive from schools about improved academic performance is a testament to how vital proper vision is for children’s development. As we celebrate World Sight Day, we remain dedicated to making a lasting impact on the lives of these children.”

Eye Q Optical’s efforts have reached students from a range of institutions, including SOS Children’s Village and McAuley Primary School. Mrs. Claudia Byer, Principal of McAuley Primary, acknowledged the life-changing nature of early vision screening: “Many children struggle in school due to undiagnosed vision issues. Eye Q Optical’s screenings have been instrumental in identifying and addressing these problems, and we are deeply appreciative of their kindness.”

Karen Scarlett, Client Care Coordinator at Eye Q Optical, outlined the screening process: “We work with schools to identify children in need, and we provide their parents with referrals for free consultations. If glasses are required, we make sure they are provided at no cost to the family.”

With ‘Mission Vision,’ Eye Q Optical continues its unwavering commitment to helping Jamaica’s children achieve their best possible future by improving their vision. This initiative highlights the crucial link between eye health, education, and personal growth, ensuring that children have the tools they need to succeed.
