Fox Corporation’s Super Bowl 59 Advertising Sell-Out: A Landmark Achievement in Sports Media

As Super Bowl 59 approaches, Fox Corporation has secured a major milestone by selling out all advertising slots for the highly anticipated event well ahead of schedule. This accomplishment comes on the heels of a soaring demand for Super Bowl ad space, with more than 10 coveted spots going for an eye-popping $8 million each.
Back in November, Fox had already confirmed that it had sold out of ad inventory for the February 9 event, with initial estimates placing the average price per ad at just over $7 million. However, as the game draws closer and available slots decrease, the prices have continued to surge, with an increase of around $500,000 per spot. Typically, ad prices rise incrementally by about $100,000 as the game approaches, but this year’s spike has far surpassed the usual rate, reflecting the heightened demand for this unique advertising opportunity.
“We’re sold out for the Super Bowl at what we believe is record pricing,” Fox CEO Lachlan Murdoch proudly stated during an earnings call, highlighting the network’s exceptional success in securing advertising deals. Much of the ad space was snapped up during Fox’s Upfront presentation to investors last spring, and as competition intensified for the remaining slots, advertisers were eager to pay top dollar to secure their position in front of the millions of viewers expected to tune in.
The Power of Live Sports Advertising
Super Bowl viewership continues to be a powerful magnet for advertisers, making the event one of the most coveted opportunities for brands to showcase their products. Last year’s Super Bowl, broadcast by CBS, attracted a record 123.7 million viewers across multiple platforms, including Paramount+ and Univision. When Fox aired the Super Bowl in 2023, the game drew an impressive 115 million viewers. These massive audiences are why the Super Bowl remains the largest live television event in the U.S. and a goldmine for advertisers looking to reach millions of potential customers in one fell swoop.
Mark Evans, Executive Vice President of Ad Sales for Fox Sports, commented, “If I learned anything, it’s that we’re in a period now where live sporting events, where people and families come together to watch, are more coveted than ever. There’s an escalation in price and interest in live sports, but we’re not at its peak. We’ve still got runway for growth.” This growing demand for live sports advertising underscores the invaluable role it plays in the marketing landscape.
What to Expect from Advertisers This Year
The Super Bowl ad lineup is expected to feature the usual array of big-name advertisers, including automakers, restaurant chains, and food and beverage brands. However, this year, a notable shift is underway, with an uptick in commercials from artificial intelligence and pharmaceutical companies. Streaming services and movie studios, on the other hand, are expected to have a smaller presence compared to previous years.
In an interesting twist, Fox is offering a greater number of 60-second spots this year, in addition to the standard 15- and 30-second ads. Mark Evans hinted that these extended spots will feature high-production-value commercials that are sure to capture viewers’ attention with engaging and creative content.
Expanding Reach with Tubi
In an innovative move, Fox is set to expand its Super Bowl audience by streaming the game on its free, ad-supported service, Tubi. This will be the first time Tubi will broadcast the Super Bowl, and the service will feature the same ad load as the traditional Fox broadcast. This expansion is expected to attract even more viewers, further bolstering the commercial potential of the event.
As the advertising market continues to rebound from the pandemic-era slump, live sports—particularly the Super Bowl—remain one of the most reliable investments for major brands. With record-breaking ad prices, an increased demand for Super Bowl spots, and a growing appetite for sports programming, Fox is poised to make this year’s Super Bowl a commercial triumph both on and off the field.
