General Motors Increases Dividend by 25% and Announces $6 Billion Share Buyback

General Motors (GM) has announced a 25% increase in its quarterly dividend, raising it from $0.12 to $0.15 per share, effective with the next scheduled dividend in April 2025. Additionally, the company has authorized a new $6 billion share repurchase program, with plans to repurchase $2 billion worth of shares by mid-2025, and the remainder at its discretion.
These initiatives underscore GM’s confidence in its future prospects, even amidst market uncertainties. The dividend hike reflects the company’s commitment to returning value to shareholders, and the share buyback program aims to enhance shareholder value by reducing the number of outstanding shares.
Analysts view these moves as a positive signal of GM’s financial health and strategic direction. David Whiston of Morningstar noted that the dividend increase “reflects GM’s confidence and suggests the possibility of regular annual increases.”
These actions follow a $10 billion share buyback program announced in November 2023, which GM completed by repurchasing 87 million shares in the open market. The company ended the fourth quarter with 995 million outstanding shares, achieving its goal of reducing the count below 1 billion.
Despite challenges such as high labor costs and potential price drops in North America, GM remains focused on balancing growth and returns. The company plans to continue returning excess capital to shareholders while maintaining a strong balance sheet and investing in its transition to electric vehicles (EVs). GM anticipates a $2 billion reduction in EV operating losses this year and projects a net income of $11.2 billion to $12.5 billion for 2025.
Over the past year, GM shares have risen about 18%, aligning with the broader S&P 500 index. The latest shareholder-focused initiatives, paired with ongoing strategic investments, highlight the automaker’s efforts to sustain growth and navigate an evolving industry landscape.
With a strengthened commitment to returning capital and a clear path toward long-term profitability, GM continues to position itself as a formidable force in the automotive market, driving value for both investors and consumers alike.
