Goldman Sachs Strengthens Asia Pacific M&A Leadership with New Co-Heads Appointment

In a strategic move aimed at bolstering its mergers and acquisitions (M&A) presence in the Asia Pacific region, Goldman Sachs has named Raghav Maliah, Yoshihiko Yano, and Ed Wittig as co-heads of M&A for the region. This appointment, announced in an internal memo on Tuesday and confirmed by a Goldman Sachs spokesperson, reflects the bank’s commitment to expanding its deals coverage in one of the most rapidly evolving markets globally.
New Leadership Brings Diverse Expertise
The newly appointed trio brings a wealth of experience from various sectors and regions. Wittig, currently serving as the global head of Industrials M&A and Aerospace and Defense in New York, will transition to the Asia Pacific team later this year. His move is part of Goldman Sachs’ broader strategy to enhance its M&A capabilities in the region. With deep expertise in industrials and defense, Wittig’s leadership is expected to drive cross-border deals and strengthen the bank’s sector-specific focus in Asia.
Raghav Maliah, who will continue to operate from Hong Kong, holds the position of global vice chairman of Investment Banking and leads the Technology, Media, and Telecom (TMT) group for Asia, excluding Japan. Maliah has already been spearheading M&A activities in the region, and his leadership will be pivotal in driving growth in these critical sectors. His extensive knowledge of the Asia Pacific market makes him an essential figure in Goldman Sachs’ continued efforts to deepen its presence in the region.
Yoshihiko Yano, the third member of the newly formed leadership team, is the co-head of Investment Banking and head of M&A in Japan. Having joined Goldman Sachs in 1998, Yano brings a longstanding history with the firm and a deep understanding of the Japanese market. His expertise and leadership will play a crucial role in the firm’s efforts to expand its footprint in Japan and beyond.
Expanding M&A Capabilities in Asia Pacific
The appointment of Maliah, Wittig, and Yano highlights Goldman Sachs’ focus on strengthening its financial sponsor M&A business and its ability to manage complex cross-border transactions. The trio’s combined experience across industries and geographies positions Goldman Sachs to capitalize on the growing opportunities in the Asia Pacific region, which remains one of the most dynamic and competitive markets in the world.
With this new leadership structure, Goldman Sachs aims to enhance its M&A coverage and build stronger relationships with regional and global clients. The bank’s commitment to deepening its presence in Asia is aligned with its broader strategy of expanding its M&A business in high-growth markets.
Looking Ahead
As the Asia Pacific region continues to evolve, the expertise and leadership of Maliah, Wittig, and Yano will be key to Goldman Sachs’ success in navigating the complexities of the market. By combining their regional knowledge and global experience, the new co-heads are expected to drive the bank’s M&A activities forward, contributing to Goldman Sachs’ long-term growth strategy in the region.
This leadership shift reflects Goldman Sachs’ ongoing efforts to adapt to market changes and strengthen its position as a leading player in the global M&A landscape.
