Heroism at 10,000 Feet: Belize Plane Hijacking Ends with Fatal Shooting of U.S. Veteran

Belize City, April 20, 2025 — In a shocking and unprecedented turn of events, a domestic flight in Belize narrowly avoided catastrophe after a U.S. national attempted to hijack the aircraft mid-flight. The dramatic incident unfolded aboard Tropic Air Flight V3-HIG on April 17, 2025, when 49-year-old Akinyela Sawa Taylor—an American military veteran—launched a violent hijacking attempt, only to be fatally shot by a brave passenger.
A Routine Flight Turns Chaotic
The Cessna 208 Grand Caravan EX departed from Corozal Airport en route to the island destination of San Pedro with 14 passengers and two crew members on board. Shortly after takeoff, Taylor reportedly pulled a knife and threatened the pilots, demanding the aircraft be diverted outside of Belizean airspace. His motivations for the diversion remain unclear at this time.
What began as a tranquil journey quickly spiraled into a terrifying ordeal as Taylor stabbed three people, including passengers and possibly crew members, in his bid to commandeer the flight.
Passenger’s Courage Thwarts Hijacker
In a stunning act of bravery, one of the passengers—whose identity has not yet been publicly released—confronted the assailant and, despite sustaining serious stab wounds, managed to shoot Taylor using a licensed firearm. The shot proved fatal.
The aircraft, already low on fuel, was swiftly diverted to Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport near Belize City, where emergency services and police units were on high alert, having been alerted via text messages sent from within the cabin.
Upon landing, authorities secured the scene, and paramedics rushed the injured to nearby hospitals. The passenger who stopped the hijacker remains in critical condition but is being lauded as a hero across the nation and beyond.
Security Lapses and Concerns Raised
Belizean law enforcement officials, led by Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, confirmed that Taylor had previously been denied entry into Belize. His presence on the domestic flight, armed with a weapon, has sparked serious concerns over airport security measures, particularly in smaller regional hubs like Corozal.
“How he managed to board with a weapon is now a key part of our investigation,” Williams told reporters. “We will ensure no such oversight puts lives at risk again.”
International Investigations Underway
The U.S. Embassy in Belize is working closely with local authorities to understand the full scope of the event. Embassy spokesperson Luke Martin assured the public of the United States’ cooperation and extended sympathies to all those affected.
“This is a tragic event,” Martin stated. “We are in close contact with Belizean officials and remain committed to supporting the safety and security of Belize’s skies.”
Public Reaction and National Praise
Across Belize and the wider Caribbean, the response has been one of awe and gratitude. Social media platforms have been flooded with praise for the passenger who risked—and nearly lost—his life to protect others on board.
Prime Minister John Briceño released a brief statement expressing his gratitude to the crew and heroic passengers: “The courage and quick thinking displayed in the face of danger is nothing short of remarkable. Belize stands united in gratitude and sorrow.”
The incident aboard Tropic Air Flight V3-HIG will undoubtedly be remembered as a defining moment in Belize’s aviation history. While investigations continue into the motive and method of the hijacking, one thing remains clear: the selfless bravery of an everyday passenger turned hero prevented what could have been an unspeakable tragedy.
