Instagram’s Shift to Video-First Platform Set to Boost Ad Revenue and Challenge Competitors

Instagram is poised to surpass expectations in terms of advertising revenue, with projections indicating that the platform will contribute over half of Meta Platforms’ total ad revenue in the United States by next year. This shift is largely driven by Instagram’s intensified focus on video content, particularly through its Reels feature, which has emerged as a direct competitor to platforms like TikTok and YouTube Shorts. As more users turn to short-form videos for entertainment and interaction, Reels has become a key component in Instagram’s growth strategy.
The platform’s transition to a “video-first” approach has proven to be a lucrative decision, capitalizing on the surge in video consumption. Instagram’s video content, particularly Reels, is now a major draw for advertisers seeking to engage audiences through short-form, visually appealing content. As Meta continues to refine its monetization efforts for Reels, Instagram is poised to experience a significant boost in ad revenue, potentially transforming the company’s financial landscape in the process.
This growth trajectory is further supported by the possibility of a TikTok ban in the United States. If such a ban were enacted, Instagram, alongside YouTube Shorts, could become a go-to platform for advertisers looking to connect with a similar demographic. Experts predict that Instagram stands to capture a significant share of ad dollars previously allocated to TikTok, further accelerating its ad revenue growth.
Key analysts highlight that Instagram’s users now spend nearly two-thirds of their time on the platform consuming video content. Jasmine Enberg, a principal analyst at eMarketer, emphasizes that Instagram’s shift toward a video-centric platform positions it to claim an even larger slice of the digital advertising market. In fact, if TikTok ads are removed from the market, Instagram is expected to capture over 20% of the ad spend previously dedicated to the platform, signaling a major opportunity for further expansion.
While Instagram’s ad revenue in 2024 is predominantly driven by traditional features like Feed and Stories—accounting for nearly 80% of total ad revenue—the platform’s newer features, such as Explore and Reels, are projected to contribute a larger share in the coming years. By 2025, revenue from these newer features is expected to grow to nearly 10%, further cementing Instagram’s importance to Meta’s financial success.
As Instagram continues to evolve into a leading destination for video content, the platform is on track to strengthen its position in the competitive digital advertising landscape. With a sharp focus on video-first features and potential gains from a changing market environment, Instagram is set to compete head-to-head with TikTok and YouTube, positioning itself as a dominant force in the advertising world.
