Itel to Cease Operations in Guyana, Impacting Hundreds of Workers

Just four years after establishing its large-scale customer service center in Guyana, Itel has announced plans to close its operations in the country, leaving hundreds of employees without jobs. The decision was communicated internally to staff through an official message, where the company detailed the rationale behind the move.

According to Itel’s management, the closure follows a thorough analysis and discussions among the leadership team. The company explained that despite making significant investments over the years, the Guyana operation has become unsustainable.

More than 400 employees are expected to lose their jobs due to the closure. While the company praised Guyana, calling it a “gem,” it admitted to facing persistent challenges even amid the country’s economic growth. Itel noted that as the local economy continues to expand, the cost of doing business has risen, and the company has struggled to find and retain qualified workers.

Further complicating matters, the company revealed difficulties in attracting and maintaining Fortune 500 clients—an essential aspect of keeping a steady flow of business to the center.

Despite several attempts to reduce expenses and engage the workforce, Itel found it increasingly difficult to operate under current conditions. As a result, the company plans to carry out a phased closure, with operations scheduled to wind down by November 30, and full closure slated for December 31.

The management emphasized that while the decision was tough, Itel is committed to offering support to affected employees throughout the transition process, with layoffs already underway.
