Jamaica Celebrates a Milestone with Over One Million Cruise Passengers in 2024

Jamaica recently achieved an impressive milestone by welcoming over one million cruise passengers this year, generating more than US$200 million for the local economy. This achievement was highlighted by Tourism Minister Hon. Edmund Bartlett during the second annual Regal Awards held at Sandals Ochi Beach Resort in Ocho Rios, St. Ann, on November 16.

Minister Bartlett spoke about the strength and resilience of Jamaica’s cruise industry, emphasizing its crucial role in the island’s economy. He explained that cruise tourism is one of the most impactful types of tourism, benefiting local communities immediately. “The economic benefits from cruise tourism are direct and substantial,” Bartlett noted, underscoring how this sector immediately boosts the income of local vendors and small business owners.

“The financial impact is felt right away,” he stated. “For small businesses in places like Ocho Rios, earnings from a cruise ship’s visit can go directly towards meeting financial obligations as soon as passengers disembark.” He further pointed out that Ocho Rios has become a vital hub for the island’s cruise activities, with nearly one-third of all cruise passengers choosing this port as their Jamaican destination.

Minister Bartlett also took the opportunity to thank Jamaica’s international cruise partners for their ongoing support, encouraging them to continue contributing to Jamaica’s tourism industry. He acknowledged their role in sustaining the steady growth of the sector.

The Regal Awards, organized by Jamaica’s Vacations (JAMVAC), recognize the top travel advisors who contribute significantly to promoting Jamaica as a destination. This year, eight standout advisors were honored, with special recognition given to the top five advisors. Minister Bartlett praised the advisors for their unwavering commitment to supporting Jamaica’s tourism, particularly in the cruise sector.

During her acceptance speech, honoree Mindy Kleeburg expressed gratitude for the acknowledgment, highlighting the dedication required to ensure a seamless travel experience for visitors. “It’s truly rewarding to be recognized for our efforts,” Kleeburg shared. “I look forward to continuing to support Jamaica’s tourism industry.”

The top five recognized advisors this year included Stephanie Mays, Mindy Kleeburg, Carol Williams, Amanda Santana, and Jacquetta White. These advisors have been instrumental in promoting Jamaica’s appeal to travelers, helping to drive growth and contribute to the island’s vibrant tourism landscape.

Jamaica’s cruise tourism sector continues to thrive, offering valuable economic benefits and transformative opportunities for communities across the island, with much of this success owed to the collaborative efforts of local businesses, government initiatives, and dedicated travel professionals.
