In a recent disclosure, cybersecurity giant Fortinet revealed that Jamaica encountered an alarming 4 million attempted cyberattacks in the first half of 2024. This revelation was part of Fortinet’s latest threat landscape report, which draws on data from FortiGuard Labs, the company’s specialized threat intelligence and analysis unit.

According to the report, February emerged as the most active month for cyberattacks, highlighting the increasingly volatile cyber threat environment that Jamaica faces. “The cyber threat landscape is constantly evolving, with cybercriminals refining their tactics and using advanced evasion techniques, increasing their chances of success,” explained Carlo Caloca, Fortinet’s Regional Sales Manager for the English Caribbean.

One of the most concerning findings from Fortinet’s report was the speed at which cybercriminals are now operating. FortiGuard Labs data revealed a 43% increase in the average time taken to exploit vulnerabilities. This trend underscores the growing sophistication and urgency of cyber threats in the region. While Jamaica experienced 30 million reported attacks in 2022, this number surged to 43 million in 2023. Though only 4 million attacks have been reported in 2024 thus far, the evolving threat landscape indicates that the situation remains precarious.

The report also touched on the dual role of artificial intelligence (AI) in cybersecurity, noting its potential as both a threat and a defense tool. Fortinet’s strategy involves leveraging AI to enhance security protocols, prioritizing and managing threats based on their severity. This approach is increasingly important as AI continues to shape both offensive and defensive cybersecurity measures.

On a broader scale, Fortinet’s report emphasized regional and global cybersecurity trends, with a particular focus on the Caribbean. The healthcare sector in Jamaica remains a prime target for cybercriminals due to the high value of its data. The rising incidence of ransomware attacks in the country further underscores the need for robust cybersecurity defenses. Fortinet has responded by increasing its investment in local resources and providing tailored cybersecurity solutions to businesses of all sizes.

Celebrating two decades of leadership in the cybersecurity sector, Fortinet has maintained a decade-long presence in Jamaica. The company’s Fortinet Training Institute is among the industry’s most comprehensive training programs, aiming to equip individuals with the necessary skills to combat emerging cyber threats. This initiative reflects Fortinet’s broader commitment to both protecting organizations and empowering people through education.

Major Country Manager for Jamaica, Ronald Donaldson

Ronald Donaldson, Fortinet’s Major Country Manager for Jamaica, addressed the growing shift toward cloud environments. While cloud technology has been around for some time, its implementation remains complex and vulnerable. Donaldson stressed the importance of securing cloud interactions and integrating technology with human processes to minimize risks. Fortinet’s focus, he noted, is on safeguarding clients’ transitions to and from the cloud, rather than offering cloud services directly.

Given the recent cybersecurity challenges faced by other companies, Fortinet advocates for comprehensive cybersecurity training for both partners and organizations. The company promotes preemptive training and offers solutions to manage the aftermath of cyber incidents. By investing in local resources and customizing security strategies to fit varying budgets and business needs, Fortinet aims to strengthen the cybersecurity posture of its clients in Jamaica and beyond.

As cyber threats continue to escalate in scale and sophistication, Fortinet’s proactive strategies, commitment to education, and investment in local infrastructure position the company as a key player in the fight against cybercrime.
