Jamaica’s Tourism Expansion into South America: A New Era of Opportunity

On December 1, Jamaica marked a pivotal moment in its tourism industry with the arrival of the inaugural LATAM Airlines flight from Lima, Peru, at Sangster International Airport in St. James. The flight’s landing was celebrated as a key milestone in Jamaica’s strategic push to tap into the South American market—a move that promises to unlock significant opportunities for the island’s tourism sector.
Minister of Tourism, the Honourable Edmund Bartlett, who was present to welcome the flight alongside a delegation of government officials and tourism executives, emphasized that this event marked the beginning of a broader and more ambitious effort to establish Jamaica as a top destination for South American travelers. “This is just the start of Jamaica being richly rewarded for its ambitious efforts in tapping into this dynamic region,” Minister Bartlett remarked.
The arrival of the inaugural flight is just the beginning, as the schedule for LATAM Airlines currently includes three weekly flights to Sangster International. The Minister is optimistic about the future, announcing that the flight frequency is expected to increase to daily service by next winter. “We anticipate the 45,000 passengers projected for this winter to grow to as many as 100,000 by next year,” Bartlett confidently stated, noting that the anticipated growth in passenger numbers reflects the country’s sustained efforts to diversify its tourism markets.
The flight, which carried 141 passengers, underscored Jamaica’s rising appeal as a sought-after travel destination. Minister Bartlett highlighted the significance of the flight, noting, “This occasion demonstrates not only our commitment to attracting diverse visitors but also the immense potential of the South American market.” He expressed optimism about the opportunities the region holds for future growth, describing the event as a clear signal that Jamaica is ready to capitalize on this new frontier.
The introduction of LATAM’s flights from Peru is part of the Jamaica Tourist Board’s (JTB) broader strategy to explore non-traditional tourism markets, complementing the country’s well-established tourism relationships with the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. With introductory fares starting at just USD $197 one way and USD $831 round trip, the route is expected to draw a steady stream of South American visitors eager to experience all that Jamaica has to offer.
“This new connection is a testament to our proactive strategies to diversify our markets,” Minister Bartlett commented. “We are confident that the groundwork we’ve laid will continue to pay off, not just for tourism but for economic opportunities as well.”
The festive arrival at Sangster International featured a lively cultural reception, with a local mento band welcoming passengers. The vibrant celebration, with visitors and their families dancing to the music and enthusiastically expressing their excitement, was a true reflection of Jamaica’s rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality. “The warmth of our people is one of our strongest assets,” said Bartlett. “Moments like these remind us of the importance of sharing our culture with the world.”
Minister Bartlett underscored that the decision to target South America is part of a broader vision by the Ministry of Tourism to diversify Jamaica’s tourism offerings and attract a wider array of international visitors. Beyond tourism, he highlighted the potential for this new route to foster stronger economic ties between Jamaica and Peru, with possible benefits in trade, investment, and cultural exchange.
“As more South Americans discover Jamaica’s beauty, we anticipate opportunities for increased trade, investment, and cultural exchange,” the Minister said. “Jamaica is on the cusp of achieving something truly extraordinary in the South American market.”
In closing, Minister Bartlett urged stakeholders in the tourism industry to remain focused and continue pushing forward. “This achievement represents progress, but it is only the beginning,” he said. “We are committed to enhancing Jamaica’s visibility and appeal across South America, ensuring that this partnership grows stronger in the years to come.”
