Kamala Harris Launches Presidential Bid with Record-Breaking Fundraising Haul

US Vice President Kamala Harris

In a remarkable show of financial strength, Vice President of the United States Kamala Harris has officially launched her presidential bid, raising an unprecedented $81 million within the first 24 hours of announcing her candidacy. This record-breaking fundraising achievement is one of the most significant financial boosts ever seen in Democratic politics, signaling strong early support for Harris’ 2024 presidential campaign.

Harris’ campaign reported that an impressive 888,000 donors contributed on the first day, with 60 percent of them making their initial donation for the 2024 election cycle. Additionally, 43,000 donors set up recurring contributions, demonstrating robust and sustained backing for Harris’ bid.

While the campaign did not disclose the specific breakdown between small-dollar online donations and contributions from major donors, data from ActBlue, the prominent digital donation platform for Democrats, revealed staggering figures. ActBlue processed over $90 million during the same 24-hour period, underscoring the widespread enthusiasm and financial momentum behind Harris’ candidacy.

The surge in online donations peaked at $11.5 million in a single hour on Sunday evening, reflecting a wave of support from grassroots donors energized by Harris’ entry into the presidential race. Political analysts see Harris’ fundraising prowess as a significant boon for the Democratic Party, which had faced uncertainty in donor support following President Biden’s lackluster debate performance and subsequent fundraising slowdown among major donors.

One notable source of contributions highlighted by the Harris campaign was a fundraising call with WinWithBlackWomen, which generated $1.6 million in donations on Sunday evening alone. Sunday’s fundraising bonanza ranked as the third-largest single day in ActBlue’s history, trailing only behind major political events such as the day following Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death in September 2020 and the aftermath of the first debate between Biden and former President Donald J. Trump.

The momentum continued into Monday, with ActBlue processing over $30 million by mid-afternoon, reinforcing Harris’ strong financial footing and broad-based support within the Democratic electorate. As Harris consolidates support within the party, the massive fundraising haul is expected to bolster her campaign’s infrastructure and outreach efforts across the country, setting the stage for a highly competitive Democratic primary season.

With her historic fundraising launch, Harris signals a formidable challenge to other contenders vying for the Democratic nomination, solidifying her position as a frontrunner in the race for the White House in 2024.
