Massy Holdings Divests Interest in Massy Distribution Jamaica: A Strategic Move to Accelerate Growth and Focus on Core Operations

In a significant move aimed at reshaping its operational strategy, Massy Holdings Limited has reached an agreement with Caribbean Distribution Partners Limited (CDPL) to divest its interest in Massy Distribution (Jamaica) Limited (MDJL). This decision is part of Massy’s broader strategy to achieve its ambitious target of US$4 billion in revenue by 2030.

The announcement, made earlier this week, informed staff at MDJL’s Carifta Avenue headquarters about the sale. MDJL, a leading distribution company in Jamaica, is responsible for selling a wide range of consumer and pharmaceutical products, including well-known brands like Mead Johnson, ConAgra Foods, Quaker, Ekaterra Lipton, Dole, and pharmaceuticals from major companies such as Sanofi, Denk Pharma, and Novo Nordisk. In 2024, MDJL generated approximately TT$395.80 million (J$9.196 billion) in revenue, contributing to roughly 4% of Massy’s integrated retail portfolio.

The decision to sell Massy’s stake in MDJL reflects the company’s evolving strategy. While Massy has built a robust distribution network in Jamaica, the company recognizes the need for a more integrated approach that combines distribution with manufacturing or retail operations to unlock the full potential of the business. Massy’s leadership expressed confidence that CDPL, a 50/50 joint venture between Agostini’s Limited and Goddard Enterprises Limited, would build on MDJL’s strong foundation to drive future growth in Jamaica.

Despite the sale of MDJL, Massy remains deeply committed to Jamaica. The company’s long history in the country dates back to 1958, with several significant acquisitions and investments over the years. Notably, Massy made its largest investment in Jamaica in 2023, acquiring IGL for US$140.5 million. Additionally, Massy has strengthened its presence through subsidiaries like Massy Gas Products (Gas Pro) and IGL, which dominate the packed and bulk LPG market in Jamaica.

Massy’s Jamaican operations had a record year in 2024, generating TT$1.17 billion (J$27.28 billion) in revenue and TT$137.99 million (J$3.21 billion) in profit before tax. The company also reported its highest-ever cash generation from operations, totaling TT$1.35 billion. This performance reflects the successful integration of IGL and the broader growth strategy that Massy is pursuing in the region.

Looking forward, Massy is focused on continuing its expansion in Jamaica through key investments in its integrated retail, gas products, and motors portfolios. With a goal of reaching US$4 billion in revenue by 2030, the company plans to achieve 40% of this growth organically, with the remaining 60% coming from mergers and acquisitions. Moreover, Massy intends for over half of its future revenue to come from hard currencies, signaling a commitment to global growth.

The sale of MDJL is expected to close by the third quarter of 2025, pending regulatory approval. As Massy continues to strengthen its position in Jamaica, the company remains committed to investing in the communities where it operates, ensuring that its businesses create lasting benefits for stakeholders.
