NCB Faces Customer Frustration Over Technical Issues with Visa Debit for Uber Transactions

In an unexpected twist, the National Commercial Bank of Jamaica (NCB) alerted its customers on Tuesday morning about a technical issue affecting Visa Debit card transactions on the Uber platform. According to NCB, users attempting to use their Visa Debit cards for Uber payments encountered delays and declined transactions. The bank reassured customers that technical teams were actively addressing the issue, aiming for a prompt resolution.

To enhance security during the troubleshooting process, NCB warned that some Visa Debit cards could experience temporary suspensions. However, NCB emphasized that these cards would still work for other types of transactions, such as in-person payments, ATM withdrawals, and online purchases outside of Uber.

By Tuesday evening, the situation became even more concerning as customers reported unexpected debits in their accounts for past Uber rides, with charges dating as far back as 2023. Many account holders saw lien balances rise sharply—some even experiencing liens up to $1 million JMD. This development caused widespread frustration, with numerous customers expressing their concerns on social media platforms like X (formerly known as Twitter) and Instagram. One user shared a screenshot of her diminished balance, expressing frustration and disbelief at the bank’s handling of the situation, noting how it unfairly impacted her remaining funds.

As discontent grew, a humorous response surfaced among social media users. One person joked, “Wait deh, the tax return from the government? Is my NCB them have enuh?” capturing the frustration in a lighthearted way amidst the financial strain.

A source close to BATV News indicated that NCB began flagging and halting Uber payments as early as October 18, 2024. Allegedly, the bank had started auditing accounts alphabetically to locate discrepancies and identify unpaid amounts, which led to additional charges being placed on some accounts. Unfortunately, for many, these back-charges placed undue financial strain, resulting in lien balances in excess of $1 million JMD in some cases.

Currently, neither NCB nor Uber has issued an official response to the inquiries regarding this ongoing issue. The incident sheds light on the complexities and challenges of maintaining secure and seamless digital payment systems. As ride-sharing services like Uber become indispensable for many, disruptions like these can have significant consequences, potentially damaging consumer trust in both the payment provider and the service.

In light of these events, experts recommend that consumers monitor their account activity closely and stay updated through official bank channels for support and information. BATV will continue to follow the story as it develops, providing timely updates to keep users informed.
