Netflix Secures Exclusive U.S. Rights for FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 and 2031

In a groundbreaking move, Netflix has acquired the exclusive U.S. broadcasting rights for the FIFA Women’s World Cup, set for 2027 and 2031. This deal marks the first time that the global sporting event will be streamed on a platform, signaling a new era for women’s sports coverage. The 2027 tournament, which runs from June 24 to July 25, will feature 32 teams competing across 12 cities in Brazil, the host nation. The venue for the 2031 World Cup will be revealed at a later date.

However, the agreement goes beyond live match coverage. Netflix plans to enhance the viewing experience with a range of studio shows and high-profile talent providing expert commentary and entertainment throughout the tournament. Leading up to the event, Netflix will also release exclusive documentary content that focuses on the star players, their inspiring journeys, and the global surge in popularity of women’s football.

This surge was clearly evident during the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup when Spain triumphed over England, winning their first-ever title in a historic 1-0 victory. The increasing popularity of the sport is a testament to its growing influence worldwide, and Netflix aims to spotlight this momentum.

The FIFA Women’s World Cup is just the latest addition to Netflix’s expanding portfolio of premium live programming, which spans sports, entertainment, and comedy. Earlier this year, the streaming giant attracted a massive 108 million viewers to watch the high-profile boxing match between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson, making it the most-streamed sporting event in history. Furthermore, the co-main event featuring Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano became the most-watched professional women’s sports event in U.S. history, drawing 74 million live global viewers. Upcoming events include the NFL Christmas Day double-header featuring the Chiefs vs. Steelers and Ravens vs. Texans, as well as the debut of WWE Raw on Netflix in January.

Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, Bela Bajaria, commented on the deal, stating, “Our record-breaking success with Amanda Serrano vs. Katie Taylor demonstrated the massive appetite for women’s sports and live programming. I’ve seen the fandom for the FIFA Women’s World Cup grow tremendously—from the electric atmosphere in France in 2019 to the incredible energy across Australia and New Zealand in 2023. Bringing this iconic tournament to Netflix is not just about streaming matches; it’s about celebrating the players, the culture, and the passion driving the global rise of women’s sports.”

FIFA President Gianni Infantino also expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership: “This is a landmark moment for sports media rights. As a marquee brand and FIFA’s new long-term partner, Netflix has shown a very strong level of commitment to growing women’s football. This agreement sends a strong message about the real value of the FIFA Women’s World Cup and the global women’s game. FIFA and Netflix partnering together makes this a truly historic day for broadcasting and for women’s football.”

Beyond live games, Netflix will play a pivotal role in building excitement for the tournaments by showcasing documentaries like Under Pressure: The U.S. Women’s World Cup Team, which chronicles the team’s pursuit of the 2023 title, as well as the Emmy-nominated Beckham, Captains of the World (in partnership with FIFA), and upcoming documentaries on football stars Vinícius Júnior and José Mourinho. The streaming service will offer the content in multiple languages, including English and Spanish, ensuring a broad global reach.

This exclusive partnership marks a historic moment for both Netflix and the FIFA Women’s World Cup, reinforcing the growing global recognition of women’s football and its increasing influence on the international sports landscape.
