Private Equity Scores Big: Boston Celtics Sold for Record-Breaking $6.1 Billion

In a landmark transaction highlighting the increasing role of private equity in professional sports, a consortium led by private equity executive Bill Chisholm has reached an agreement to acquire the reigning NBA champion Boston Celtics for a staggering $6.1 billion. This record-breaking deal, announced Thursday by the team’s ownership, marks the highest sale price ever for a U.S. sports franchise.

Historic Sale and Ownership Transition

If approved by the NBA, this acquisition will surpass the previous record set in 2023 when the Washington Commanders were sold for $6.05 billion. The Celtics’ current ownership group, Boston Basketball Partners—led by the Grousbeck family—will hand over control this summer. However, Wyc Grousbeck will remain as the team’s CEO and governor through the 2027-28 season, ensuring a smooth leadership transition.

A significant component of the new ownership group is private equity firm Sixth Street, which is investing over $1 billion in the deal. Other prominent figures involved include Boston-area businessman and existing Celtics owner Rob Hale, as well as Bruce Beal Jr., president of real estate giant Related Companies. Chisholm, a co-founder of Symphony Technology Group, brings a deep background in private equity, particularly in technology investments—potentially foreshadowing a shift in the franchise’s operational strategies.

Chisholm’s Deep Celtics Connection

Chisholm, a lifelong Celtics fan, expressed his enthusiasm and deep-rooted connection to the franchise. “Growing up on the North Shore and attending college in New England, I have been a die-hard Celtics fan my entire life. I understand how important the Celtics are to the city of Boston,” he stated.

Grousbeck also voiced strong support for Chisholm’s leadership, emphasizing his passion for the team and the city. “Bill is a terrific person and a true Celtics fan, born and raised here in the Boston area. His love for the team and the city of Boston, along with his chemistry with the rest of the Celtics leadership, make him a natural choice to be the next governor and controlling owner of the team,” Grousbeck remarked.

While the NBA has declined to comment on the pending transaction, the sale’s approval is widely expected.

Soaring Valuations in the NBA

The Celtics’ franchise value has skyrocketed in recent years, fueled by the booming sports media landscape. A recent valuation estimated the team’s worth at $5.5 billion, placing it second only to the Golden State Warriors, who hold a $9.4 billion valuation.

One of the major drivers of these soaring valuations is the NBA’s lucrative new media rights deal. The league recently secured an 11-year, $76 billion agreement with Walt Disney, NBCUniversal, and Amazon, making sports franchises increasingly attractive to institutional investors.

Private Equity’s Growing Influence in Sports

This sale underscores a broader trend in professional sports, where franchise valuations have risen to levels that make individual ownership increasingly difficult. To accommodate this shift, the NBA has allowed private equity firms to invest in teams, mirroring similar moves by other major sports leagues. The NFL recently adopted a comparable policy, reinforcing the growing presence of institutional investors in professional sports.

Celtics: A Storied Legacy with a Bright Future

With 18 NBA championships—the most in league history—the Celtics remain one of the most iconic franchises in professional basketball. This season, they hold the second-best record in the Eastern Conference and are poised to contend for another championship.

If the NBA finalizes the deal, Chisholm and his group will take control of one of the most historic teams in the league. Given Chisholm’s background, the Celtics could see a more data-driven, investment-oriented approach to team management and operations, aligning with modern trends in sports franchise ownership.

This transaction not only sets a new benchmark for sports franchise valuations but also signals a new era for the Boston Celtics, blending private equity influence with a legacy of basketball excellence.
