Shein Slashes U.S. Prices After Tariff Relief as Fast-Fashion Giants Battle for Survival

May 18, 2025 | BATV News Desk
Shein Group, the Chinese-founded fast-fashion juggernaut, is slashing prices across its U.S. catalog in a strategic bid to win back consumers following a steep decline in spending. This comes after the Trump administration temporarily eased tariffs on Chinese imports, providing a crucial, albeit short-lived, window of relief for cross-border e-commerce platforms.
According to Bloomberg News, the average price of 98 Shein items dropped to $5.56 as of Wednesday, May 14—a 13% plunge from a recent peak of $6.38 on May 7. The price cuts were accompanied by widespread customer alerts from Shein, highlighting the brand’s new pricing model and promising zero added checkout fees related to tariffs.
Temporary Tariff Easing Sparks Price War
The price changes follow a 90-day tariff relief initiative by the U.S. government, which slashed the sweeping 145% duty on most Chinese imports to 30%. Additionally, the “de minimis” tax on small parcels shipped from China and Hong Kong—a vital channel for platforms like Shein and Temu—was lowered from 120% to 54%.
The changes have triggered divergent responses from e-commerce players. While Shein moved quickly to pass on savings to consumers, Temu, owned by China’s PDD Holdings, took the opposite route by imposing new import surcharges on goods shipped from China in late April. This move may have contributed to a weakening of its U.S. foothold.
Slipping Sales and Consumer Fatigue
Both fast-fashion platforms have struggled amid tariff-induced price hikes and customer dissatisfaction. Bloomberg Second Measure data revealed a 15% drop in Shein’s U.S. sales for the seven days ending May 4, compared to the same period last year. Temu saw a 10% dip in sales over the four weeks leading to May 4.
Supporting this trend, Similarweb reported that daily website traffic for both Shein and Temu plummeted over 20% in the 15 days following the price increases—an alarming signal in a market where digital engagement often dictates sales performance.
U.S. Retailers Reap the Benefits
While Chinese e-commerce platforms are reeling, traditional U.S. retailers appear to be capitalizing on the instability. Amazon recorded an 8.1% increase in U.S. sales for the week ending May 4, while Walmart saw a 4.6% uptick in the same period. Analysts suggest that stability in supply chains and pricing consistency are contributing factors to this domestic growth.
Short-Term Strategy, Long-Term Uncertainty
Despite Shein’s pricing pivot, market watchers remain cautious. The tariff reduction is temporary and still significantly higher than rates before Trump’s return to office. With U.S.-China trade negotiations ongoing and policy direction subject to rapid change, the current relief may prove fleeting.
“Shein’s aggressive discounting could offer short-term relief, but long-term competitiveness will depend on supply chain flexibility, localization strategies, and regulatory adaptation,” noted a retail analyst at GlobalTrade Insights.
As consumers weigh pricing against trust, convenience, and geopolitical uncertainty, Shein’s battle for market share in the U.S. remains a high-stakes game—one shaped by both fashion trends and the ever-shifting winds of international trade policy.
