Strategic Moves Propel Mayberry Jamaican Equities to Impressive Gains in 2024

Mayberry Jamaican Equities (MJE) has posted remarkable financial achievements for the first nine months of 2024, showing resilience in the face of falling interest rates and fluctuating stock markets. Despite these economic challenges, MJE has managed a substantial turnaround, with its net profits experiencing a significant boost due to effective strategic decisions.

The company recorded a net profit of $211.8 million in the first quarter, accompanied by a total comprehensive income of $113 million. This represents a substantial rebound from last year’s downturn, where the market experienced a decline of over 30%. So far, in 2024, MJE’s comprehensive income has reached an impressive $448 million, marking a 110% growth compared to the $167 million achieved during the same period in 2023.

Although the company reports a trading loss of $256 million for the year to date—an improvement from a substantial $2.1 billion loss in 2023—MJE has reported trading profits for the past two consecutive quarters. The company is optimistic about offsetting these losses by the close of the year.

MJE’s focus on enhancing shareholder value is evident, with a 1.1% increase in shareholders’ equity, bringing the total to $192 million, despite a 4.7% reduction in total assets. The company’s ability to navigate economic challenges continues to be a driving force behind its positive performance.

A notable development this year has been MJE’s strategic divestment of its 20% stake in Caribbean Producers Jamaica (CPJ) for $2.3 billion, or $10.50 per share—at a premium over the prevailing market price. This transaction, completed with AS Bryden Holdings Ltd, highlights MJE’s commitment to maximizing shareholder returns through strategic maneuvers.

Commenting on the sale, Executive Chairman Chris Berry emphasized the transaction’s significance for CPJ’s future growth. He explained, “For CPJ to continue expanding, it needed a partner with a broader platform. This sale demonstrates our capability to execute large transactions and attract strategic investors.”

Looking ahead, Berry expressed optimism about the macroeconomic outlook, noting that a decline in interest rates could open up opportunities for sustained growth. “I’m seeking companies with strong growth potential over the next 5-10 years,” he remarked, stressing the importance of low debt levels in safeguarding investments.

Gary Peart, CEO of Mayberry Group, echoed these sentiments, observing that reduced interest rates are likely to spur economic activity and improve the profitability of undervalued companies across various sectors.

Despite certain stocks remaining undervalued—down by 15-30%—MJE has remained focused on strategic acquisitions, expanding its portfolio with increased investments in companies like Dolla Financial, Jamaica Broilers, Wisynco, WIG, and JMMB throughout 2024.

With a positive year-to-date comprehensive income and a clear emphasis on de-risking and reducing leverage, Mayberry Jamaican Equities remains steadfast in its goal to deliver value to shareholders, demonstrating a robust commitment to growth and resilience in a volatile market environment.
