Tech Layoffs in 2024: A Wave of Reductions Across the Industry

The tech sector has seen significant layoffs in 2024, beginning with reductions in the gaming industry, notably at Discord, Unity, and Twitch. As the year progressed, the trend spread to other tech giants, with several companies announcing workforce reductions involving thousands of employees.

Largest Tech Layoffs of 2024 Ranked by Impact

Based on data from Layoffs.fyi, as of August 15, 2024, the following companies have experienced the most significant layoffs:

  1. Dell: Leading the list, Dell is set to cut a total of 26,000 jobs, including an initial reduction of 6,000 employees in March, followed by an additional 20,000 planned throughout the year. This move, driven by an internal strategic shift toward AI, marks one of the most substantial layoffs in the company’s history. The company aims to reduce its workforce below 100,000, significantly down from its reported 120,000 employees as of May 2024. Most of the cuts have so far impacted the sales and marketing divisions.
  2. Intel: Ranking second, Intel announced it would cut 15,000 jobs by the beginning of August. This decision comes amid financial challenges, including $7 billion in operating losses in 2023 and difficulties in maintaining a strong presence in the PC and GPU markets. Following the layoffs, Intel’s stock prices plummeted to lows not seen since July 1997, underscoring the company’s struggles in a competitive semiconductor landscape increasingly dominated by rivals like Nvidia.
  3. Tesla: In third place, Tesla has also made significant workforce cuts, eliminating 14,500 jobs in two rounds in April. These layoffs coincide with a period of slowing demand and increased competition, particularly in the Chinese market, where aggressive price cuts have eroded profit margins. The decline in vehicle deliveries for the first time in nearly four years further highlights the challenges facing the electric vehicle maker.
  4. Cisco: Cisco has laid off 10,200 employees, representing 12% of its workforce, in a bid to realign its operations and reduce costs amid a shifting technological environment.
  5. SAP: The software giant SAP follows with a reduction of 8,000 positions, or 7% of its global workforce, as part of its restructuring efforts to enhance efficiency and focus on core business areas.

Other notable layoffs include Toshiba, which cut 4,000 jobs; Paytm with 3,500 layoffs; Getir at 3,300; PayPal with 2,600; and UKG, which reduced its workforce by 2,200 employees.

The Shifting Landscape and Future Outlook

These layoffs reflect broader industry trends where companies are reassessing their strategies and focusing on core competencies and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI). For instance, Dell’s move towards an “AI-first” strategy suggests a significant pivot aimed at sustaining long-term growth, even as it involves painful workforce reductions. Meanwhile, Intel’s struggles highlight the competitive pressures within the semiconductor market, especially as it battles to regain ground lost to Nvidia and other industry players.

Conversely, Nvidia has adopted a different approach under CEO Jensen Huang, who has committed to avoiding layoffs over the past few years. This decision has contributed to Huang’s recognition as a top-rated CEO, reflecting a strong commitment to employee retention and morale.

As the tech sector continues to evolve rapidly, the implications of these layoffs will likely shape the industry’s direction in the coming years. Companies that successfully navigate this period of disruption and transformation may emerge stronger, while others could face continued challenges amid changing market dynamics.
