The Buzz Behind Buzz-Free Brews: Non-Alcoholic Beer to Surpass Ale in 2025

By BATV Newsroom

In a sign of the times, non-alcoholic beer is on track to become the world’s second-largest beer category by volume in 2025, overtaking traditional ale, according to new projections from industry analyst IWSR. The rise of zero-proof brews marks a seismic shift in global drinking habits, especially among younger, health-conscious consumers who are redefining what it means to enjoy a beer.

While global beer volumes fell by 1% in 2024, non-alcoholic beer defied the downturn, surging by 9% worldwide. Since its growth took off in 2018, the segment has consistently outperformed the broader beer market—a trend IWSR predicts will continue, with annual growth projected at 8% through 2029. In stark contrast, ale is expected to shrink by 2% each year over the same period.

Despite still representing just 2% of global beer consumption, the impact of non-alcoholic beer is outsized. Lager maintains a dominant 92% market share, but even its growth has started to plateau.

The cultural momentum behind non-alcoholic beer is undeniable. The rise is propelled by a growing movement of “sober curious” consumers—especially Gen Z and millennials—who are choosing moderation over intoxication. For Gen Z, drinking less is becoming the norm, while millennials have emerged as the most significant demographic for non-alcoholic beer consumption. Many identify with living a “damp lifestyle,” balancing social drinking with health-focused choices.

This shift has not gone unnoticed by industry giants. Brewers like Guinness, Heineken, and Budweiser have all released non-alcoholic versions of their flagship beers, investing in product innovations that replicate the taste of traditional brews more convincingly than ever before.

The financial payoff is clear. According to investment firm Bernstein, the global non-alcoholic beer market brought in more than $17 billion in retail sales in 2023. Germany, Spain, and Japan are leading the consumption charts, with the United States coming in sixth by volume. However, the U.S. lags significantly in market penetration.

Still, the American market is brewing up its own success stories. Athletic Brewing, a Connecticut-based startup founded in 2018, now holds a commanding 17% share of the U.S. non-alcoholic beer market—up from just 4% in 2021. Valued at approximately $800 million in its latest funding round, the company has outpaced legacy brands like Bud Zero and Heineken 0.0.

Like their alcoholic counterparts, zero-proof beers have also attracted celebrity endorsements. Actor Tom Holland’s brand Bero, NBA star Dwyane Wade’s collaboration on Budweiser Zero, and actor Dax Shepherd’s entry with Ted Segers all highlight the segment’s mainstream appeal and star-studded backing.

As more consumers embrace mindful drinking and health-forward lifestyles, the future of non-alcoholic beer looks anything but flat. With better taste, broader availability, and cultural relevance, this once-niche category is tapping into a new era—one buzz-free pint at a time.
