Trump vs. Powell: Political Pressure Builds as Fed Holds Firm on Rates

April 18, 2025 | BATV News
Tensions between political leadership and the U.S. Federal Reserve reached new heights this week as President Donald Trump launched a scathing attack on Fed Chair Jerome Powell, intensifying his calls for interest rate cuts and even suggesting Powell’s removal.
A Renewed Push for Lower Rates
In a post shared on his Truth Social platform, Trump criticized Powell’s leadership, stating that his termination “cannot come fast enough.” The president reiterated his belief that the Federal Reserve should have reduced interest rates much earlier, likening the situation to the European Central Bank’s more dovish monetary policy.
“The Fed’s benchmark interest rate is stuck between 4.25% and 4.5%,” Trump wrote, “and Powell should have slashed rates long ago – but he must do it now.”
This demand reflects growing frustration among some political leaders and business allies who believe tighter monetary policy is stifling economic momentum as inflation moderates.
Fed Defends Its Independence
Trump’s comments came a day after Powell addressed the Economic Club of Chicago, defending the Federal Reserve’s independence. His remarks drew applause from top business executives, as he emphasized the importance of insulating monetary policy decisions from partisan politics.
“Independence is very widely understood and supported in Washington and in Congress where it really matters,” Powell stated.
Despite past threats from Trump and a pending Supreme Court case involving attempts to remove members of other independent bodies, Powell affirmed that the central bank remains unaffected and is closely monitoring the legal proceedings.
Powell’s term as chair is set to expire in May 2026. It remains uncertain whether Trump is counting on legal rulings to fast-track a leadership change or intends to wait out the term.
The Tariff Factor: Inflation or Instability?
Underlying Trump’s discontent is Powell’s cautionary stance on the economic impact of Trump’s aggressive tariff policies. Speaking on Wednesday, Powell warned that increased tariffs could introduce inflationary pressures while simultaneously dampening employment—potentially driving the economy away from the Fed’s dual mandate of price stability and maximum employment.
“While tariffs are highly likely to generate at least a temporary rise in inflation, it is also possible that the effects could be more persistent,” Powell noted.
The challenge, Fed officials say, lies in the uncertainty of the policies themselves—unpredictable rollouts and shifting details make forecasting difficult. Internally, Fed policymakers have begun referring to the situation as an economic “shock” with no clear historical parallel.
Monetary Policy in Limbo
Last year, the Federal Reserve aligned briefly with other central banks to cut interest rates, trimming the policy rate by a full percentage point over three meetings. But inflationary pressures persisted into the fall of 2024, prompting a pause in cuts.
Now, the Fed is adopting a “wait and see” approach, holding off on further rate moves until the economic effects of tariffs and other policy shifts become clearer.
Some Fed officials have expressed willingness to act swiftly if the labor market deteriorates rapidly. Others are wary that premature or excessive rate cuts could unanchor inflation expectations, forcing more aggressive tightening later.
Global Implications
As global markets react to the Fed’s decisions, the implications of its current stance extend far beyond U.S. borders. Analysts suggest that continued political interference could erode the central bank’s credibility, potentially unsettling investor confidence and global financial stability.
While Trump sharpens his rhetoric and Powell maintains his institutional ground, the tug-of-war between politics and policy is intensifying, with significant consequences for the U.S. economy and beyond.
