U.S. SEC Creates Task Force to Develop Cryptocurrency Regulatory Framework

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has announced the formation of a specialized task force to create a regulatory framework for cryptocurrency assets. This marks a pivotal move under the Trump administration, aiming to reshape the U.S.’s approach to digital asset regulation.

President Donald Trump, who previously campaigned as a “crypto president,” has expressed a strong intention to reverse the crypto industry restrictions that were imposed during former President Joe Biden’s administration. Under Biden, the SEC filed multiple lawsuits against prominent crypto firms, including Coinbase and Kraken, accusing them of violating the SEC’s regulations. These companies, however, have denied the charges, arguing that the SEC’s existing rules are ill-suited for cryptocurrencies and that there is ongoing uncertainty about when a digital token qualifies as a security—an issue that places it under the SEC’s jurisdiction.

For years, the cryptocurrency sector has pushed for clearer and more defined regulations. The SEC’s latest announcement, led by Republican Commissioner Mark Uyeda, who assumed the role of acting SEC Chair earlier this week, alongside Commissioner Hester Peirce, represents a significant policy shift in favor of the crypto industry. According to the SEC, the task force’s goal is to “help the Commission draw clear regulatory lines, provide realistic paths to registration, craft sensible disclosure frameworks, and deploy enforcement resources judiciously.”

This task force is seen as a significant policy win for the crypto community, as it signals a collaborative and transparent regulatory approach under the new administration. Reports indicate that Trump is preparing executive orders aimed at easing regulatory pressures on the cryptocurrency market and promoting wider digital asset adoption.

The move has garnered widespread support from industry stakeholders. Jonathan Jachym, global head of policy at Kraken, praised the announcement as a crucial step toward meaningful crypto policy reform. He emphasized the importance of ending the “regulation-by-enforcement” era, encouraging further dialogue between regulators and the industry to establish clarity in cryptocurrency regulations.

This shift marks the beginning of a new chapter for the cryptocurrency industry, which has long sought clear guidelines and cooperative regulatory processes. The development signals a move toward establishing a more predictable and supportive regulatory environment for digital assets in the United States.
