UDC Implements Precautionary Closures and Limited Operations Due to Tropical Storm Rafael

Kingston, Jamaica – November 5, 2024
As Tropical Storm Rafael brings heavy rains and turbulent weather to Jamaica, the Urban Development Corporation (UDC) has announced temporary closures and restricted operations at several locations. The decision, guided by advisories from the Meteorological Service Division, reflects the UDC’s commitment to safeguarding its facilities, staff, and visitors.
Closed Facilities and Offices
In response to the storm, the UDC has closed its Corporate Office in Kingston, the Jamaica Conference Centre’s main office, and the St. Ann Development Company (SADCo) office for Tuesday, November 5, 2024. Customer service centers of the Runaway Bay Water Company in St. Catherine and St. Ann are also temporarily closed.

Popular attractions managed by the UDC, including Reach Falls in Portland and Turtle River Park in St. Ann, are among those impacted. Craft markets across UDC locations will not operate until further notice. Additionally, all UDC-managed beaches, such as the iconic Dunn’s River Falls, Bluefields Beach, Long Bay Beach, Harmony Beach, and Ocho Rios Bay Beach, are temporarily closed as officials conduct safety evaluations on water conditions.
Open Locations and Continued Operations
While the UDC has implemented these closures, some facilities remain open. Dunn’s River Falls’ general section, the Green Grotto Caves in St. Ann, the Ocho Rios Commercial Centre, and Runaway Bay Water Company’s operational facilities are still accessible, though customer service centers are shut. The Negril Main Office, Western Region Main Office, and the main office at Harmony Beach Park continue normal operations.

Ongoing Monitoring and Public Safety
The UDC assures the public that it is actively monitoring weather conditions and will adjust operations as needed. Updates will be provided on the reopening of facilities once conditions are deemed safe. The Corporation encourages the public to stay informed through the Meteorological Service Division, news outlets, and the UDC’s WhatsApp and social media channels.
By proactively adapting to adverse conditions, the UDC demonstrates its commitment to public safety and responsible management during this weather event.
