United Airlines Leverages Apple’s Find My Technology for Streamlined Baggage Recovery This Holiday Season

This holiday season, United Airlines introduces a game-changing tool to enhance its baggage handling system, offering passengers an added layer of security in case their luggage goes missing. The Chicago-based carrier is making history by becoming the first major airline to integrate Apple’s Find My item location service into its operations, ensuring travelers can easily track their bags during transit.

In a move aimed at improving the customer experience, United Airlines announced this new feature, which allows passengers to monitor the location of their checked luggage in real-time. By attaching an Apple AirTag or any compatible Find My network accessory to their bags, passengers now have the ability to securely share their luggage’s whereabouts with United’s customer service agents in the event of a delay.

The airline highlighted that while fewer than 1% of passengers experience delayed baggage, this new technology will significantly reduce recovery times for those who do face delays. United Airlines believes this innovation will streamline the process, allowing for faster reunification with their bags.

How It Works: If a passenger’s checked bag does not arrive at its destination, they can quickly file a delayed baggage report through the United app. For those using an AirTag or Find My network accessory, they can create a Share Item Location link via the Find My app on their Apple device (iPhone, iPad, or Mac). This link is then attached to the baggage report, allowing United’s customer service team to track the bag’s real-time location on an interactive map. The map updates continuously with timestamps, helping authorized agents expedite the recovery process.

Once the bag is successfully returned to its owner, the location-sharing feature is turned off, and passengers also have the option to stop sharing their bag’s location at any time. The link expires after seven days, ensuring privacy is maintained.

The technology leverages Apple’s extensive Find My network, which consists of over a billion Apple devices globally. United itself contributes to this network with over 120,000 iPhones, iPads, and Macs, all working together to help pinpoint the location of lost luggage. This crowdsourced tracking system relies on Bluetooth wireless technology, providing encrypted and anonymous location updates to the customer.

Getting Started: To use this service, passengers must ensure their devices are running iOS 18.2 or later, and that the United app is updated. For those who don’t have the app, they will receive text notifications with tracking instructions, along with the option to add a Share Item Location link for their AirTag or compatible device.

This integration of Apple’s cutting-edge technology reflects United Airlines’ commitment to improving customer satisfaction, especially during the high-volume holiday travel season. With the power of Apple’s Find My network, United is taking significant strides in solving the often-dreaded issue of lost luggage, making travel a little less stressful for passengers around the globe.
