World IP Day 2025: Celebrating the Power of Music and Intellectual Property

April 26, 2025 | Kingston, Jamaica — As melodies echo across continents and rhythms resonate through generations, World Intellectual Property Day 2025 turns up the volume on the transformative power of music under the theme: “IP and Music: Feel the Beat of IP.” Spearheaded by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), this year’s celebration shines a spotlight on the critical role of intellectual property (IP) rights in empowering musicians, composers, and creators around the globe.

🎶 IP: The Backbone of the Music Industry

World IP Day, celebrated annually on April 26, has always recognized the intersection between creativity and rights. In 2025, the spotlight is on music — a universal language that unites cultures, tells stories, and ignites change. But behind every beat and lyric lies a network of IP protections that ensure creators are recognized, rewarded, and empowered.

From copyright that protects original compositions to trademarks that help brand an artist’s image, and patents that support innovative audio technologies — IP laws are at the heart of the creative process. According to WIPO, a fair and robust IP system not only protects musicians but also fuels innovation, supports industry growth, and builds sustainable careers in the arts.

🎥 Youth Voices Amplified: Global Video Competition

One of the highlights of this year’s campaign was the World IP Day Youth Video Competition, where young creatives between 18–35 were invited to submit short videos (60–90 seconds) on the impact of music, innovation, and IP in shaping a better future.

More than 400 entries from 67 countries flooded WIPO’s platforms, showcasing talent, insight, and the voices of a new generation that deeply values both creativity and the legal frameworks that protect it. Winners, announced on April 25, were awarded top-tier digital production gear valued up to CHF 4,000 — a tangible step toward supporting their artistic ambitions.

📱 #FeelTheBeat: A Social Media Celebration

To engage the global community in a fun and rhythmic way, WIPO launched the #FeeltheBeat Dance Challenge. Participants were encouraged to choreograph routines to the official World IP Day soundtrack and share them on social media platforms. This campaign not only boosted awareness but also underscored how viral content and digital platforms intersect with IP, highlighting the need for creators to understand their rights in the digital age.

🧠 Learning and Legal Literacy: Events Across Borders

Educational empowerment remained at the forefront of this year’s World IP Day. A series of webinars, workshops, and panel discussions were hosted in collaboration with WIPO member states and creative industry partners. These sessions explored topics such as:

  • Copyright registration and enforcement
  • Music licensing and royalty structures
  • Protecting digital performances and recordings
  • Emerging IP challenges in AI-generated music

For Jamaican and Caribbean creators, these conversations are particularly vital. As local talent continues to break into international markets, understanding IP is essential to ensuring lasting success and fair compensation.

🌍 A Global Movement for Creative Justice

World IP Day 2025 was not just a celebration — it was a call to action. With countries from Africa to Asia, Europe to the Caribbean hosting events and campaigns, the message was clear: music moves the world, and IP powers that movement.

In an age where content can be streamed, remixed, and shared in an instant, protecting the rights of the creators behind the content is more important than ever. For artists, producers, and songwriters in the Caribbean, it’s an opportunity to engage, learn, and lead in advocating for IP reforms and rights awareness.
